Malaco Records had some kind of a good idea: Why not have an internet radio station that plays all Southern Soul music, all the time??
On February 1, 2006 Southern Soul Radio made its broadcasting debut with its first DJs at the helm, DDT and Funky Larry during the day and Uncle Bobo in the evenings.
The programming began strong with tracks from the Malaco catalog, classic soul tunes of Motown, Capitol and Atlantic, traditional blues and Mississippi Delta blues. The response was overwhelming. We began with a few hundred listeners and now, almost two years later, the number is doubled and counting!
Among the most recent additions to the programming is the Stax catalog. "But we continue adding new music daily," says DJ Funky Larry.
Southern Soul Radio is live and on the air 6 days a week, sunup to sundown, and continue to crank the tunes all throughout the night. DJs Funky Larry and "Outlaw" are the current DJs on the air.
Funky Larry shared a little insight to its success, "It's grassroots and feel-good music. you can't get any more basic from this. We are getting e-mails from around the world: Sweden, Germany, France and Japan. It's also a big hit with armed forces serving our country overseas."
He also mentioned because of the station's popularity, they have received requests from commercial stations that want to carry their programming. "It's a possibility in the future," says Funky.
